Biographies of the Legislators

 

Senator HANK ERWIN - District 14
Senator Erwin is serving his second term in the Alabama Senate. He was born April 2, 1949, in Birmingham. He received a B.S. degree from Troy State University, a B.A. degree from Southwestern Bible College and an M.A. degree from Dallas Seminary. He and his wife, Shelia Joyce Erwin, are the parents of two children: Andrew and Jonathan. He is a member of the Lakeside Baptist Church, in Birmingham. Senator Erwin serves on the ALCAP Board, Freedoms Foundation Advisory Board and Chilton Chamber of Commerce. He is President and CEO of Save America Foundation. His hobbies include scuba diving, tennis and chess. Senator Erwin is the son of the late Henry E. "Red" Erwin, 20th Air Force, United States Army Air Corps, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, April 12, 1945, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty. As a radio operator aboard a B-29 in the Pacific, Red Erwin sustained severe and permanent injury to himself in personally disposing of a phosphorus bomb, while in flight, thus saving the lives of the entire crew from certain catastrophe.

Senator STEVE FRENCH - District 15
Senator French, a Republican, is serving his third term in the Senate . He was born May 22, 1962, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Personnel and Industrial Relations from Auburn University. Senator French is a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, where he serves on the Church's Administrative Council. He is married to the former Elizabeth “Betsy” Orcutt of Birmingham. They have four daughters: Alex, Sally, Lizzie and Virginia.

Senator French is an investment and insurance specialist, concentrating in the areas of estate planning, asset protection, and wealth creation. He holds a number of professional licenses issued by the National Association of Securities Dealers, and those issued by the State of Alabama's Department of Insurance. Those designations include: Series 7 and Series 63 brokerage licenses, life insurance, health insurance, and property and casualty insurance licenses.

Senator French has an extensive background in Republican politics, both in Alabama and nationally. Senator French served as Director of the Alabama Republican Party, 1988-1991. He was subsequently hired by the Republican National Committee as one of seven Regional Political Directors, serving in that capacity until Spring, 1992. He was then hired as Alabama campaign manager for the Bush/Quayle '92 campaign. After the 1992 election cycle, Senator French established a political consulting company, where he worked on numerous legislative, judicial and federal campaigns before retiring upon his election to the Alabama Senate in 1998.

Senator French served as the Organizational Chairman for the George W. Bush for President Campaign in 2000, and the 6th Congressional District chairman for the Bush/Cheney '04 campaign.

Senator French serves on the Alabama Commission on Infrastructure and SMART Governing Legislative Task Force.

Among the awards presented to Senator French during his tenure as a State Senator are the following: 2000 Statesmanship Award; 2001 Outstanding Conservative Senator Award; 2002 Lawmaker of the Year, awarded by the Alabama Independent Insurance Agents. He is an alumnus of the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL). Senator French is also an honorary Fellow and board member of the Policy Exchange Foundation.

By appointment of the Lieutenant Governor, Senator French serves as a member of the Energy Council and the Joint Legislative Transportation Committee.

Senator JABO WAGGONER - District 16
Senator Waggoner, born in Birmingham, Alabama, on January 8, 1937, is serving his fifth term in the Senate after serving from 1966-1983 in the House of Representatives. Senator Waggoner, President, Birmingham Business Consultants, LLC, received his B.A. degree from Birmingham Southern College and his J.D. degree from Birmingham School of Law. He and his wife Marilyn are the parents of four children: Scott (deceased), Mark, Lyn Waggoner Kilpatrick, and Jay. Senator Waggoner is a Republican and a member of the Homewood Church of Christ. He serves on the following boards: United Cerebral Palsy, Metropolitan Development Board, Better Business Bureau, Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and Pinnacle Bank. He served as head coach of the Birmingham Touchdown Club and was president of the Birmingham Tip-Off Club.

Pursuant to Senate Rule 47(i), Senator Waggoner was elected Senate Minority Leader in the 2002-2006 quadrennium, and re-elected for the current quadrennium on January 16, 2007. Under the provisions of Rule 47(j), Senator Waggoner, as Senate Minority Leader, is a voting member of all Senate Standing Committees, except the local legislation committees.

Senator Waggoner has the longest record of service, of any legislator from Jefferson County, in Alabama history.

Representative GREG CANFIELD -District 48
Representative Greg Canfield is a native of Birmingham. He graduated from Huffman High School in 1978. He went on to attend the University of Alabama until 1981 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1983. While a student at the University of Alabama, Representative Canfield was active in student affairs and served as Executive Assistant to the SGA President and afterwards as President of the Interfraternity Council.

Representative Canfield began his career in sales for a Fortune 500 transportation company and later was promoted to the position of South Central Regional Sales Manager for Emery Worldwide prior to entering the insurance and financial services field in 1991. In January 1993, he founded Canfield Insurance & Financial Services where he currently serves as President and CEO.

He married the former Denise Coward in 1983 and has two children, Rachel and John. Representative Canfield and his wife are active members of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church where they both serve in the lay ministries as Extraordinary Ministers of Communion and Canfield also serves as a Lector.

Elected to two terms, beginning in 2000, he served as President of the Vestavia Hills City Council. Canfield served on the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for six years and as President of that organization in 1997. He was also a member of the 1997 inaugural class of Leadership Vestavia Hills and later served on its Board of Directors from 1997 to 2001 and as President for the 1999/2000 term and a member of the Leadership Birmingham Class of 2005.

Canfield is an active supporter of public education, area youth and senior services; having served as a coach for youth baseball, football, soccer and as a former board member of the Alabama Gymnastics Education Foundation at Mountain Brook Gymnastics. In addition, Canfield served as a liaison to the Vestavia Hills Senior Citizens Association.

Representative MIKE HILL - District 41
Representative Mike Hill was elected in 1986. He was born on March 3, 1949, received his B.S. Degree from Auburn University, attended the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University, and Commercial Lending School from Oklahoma State University. He and his wife, Carol, are the parents of three children, Hayden, Hunter and Jon Michael who is deceased . Representative Hill works as a title insurance agent and is a Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Columbiana. He previously served on the State Board of Directors for the Alabama Easter Seals, on the Board of Directors for the Birmingham Occupational Rehabilitation Center, and is a life member of the Columbiana Kiwanis Club.

Representative JIMMY MARTIN - District 42
Representative James Martin was elected in 1998. He was born on December 14, 1938, and received his B.S. Degree from John A. Gupton College.

He and his wife, Norma, are the parents of two children, Jim and Kim, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Representative Martin is co-owner of Martin Funeral Home, Inc. and is a member of the First Baptist Church. Having served as the Chilton County Coroner for the past 36 years, he also serves on the Board of Directors for the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of the Alabama Funeral Directors' Association. Representative Martin has served as a past President and Board Member of the Clanton Country Club and is a former member of the Jaycees.

Representative JIM MCCLENDON -District 50
Representative Jim McClendon retired from his private medical practice upon beginning his first term in the Alabama Legislature in 2002. He is currently serving his second term.

He is married to the former El Tate of Arab and they live on the family farm in St. Clair Springs. Dr. McClendon did his undergraduate work at Birmingham Southern College and has his doctorate from the University of Houston. He served in the Navy Medical Service Corps in Viet Nam and afterwards taught clinical optometry at UAB. He was in private practice in Leeds and Moody for many years.

He is a past president of the Alabama Optometric Association and a former board member of St. Anne's Home, and the Jefferson County Health Planning Commission. He was a founding director of the Davis Lake Fire Department and serves on several committees at First United Methodist Church of Springville.

Dr. McClendon serves on several House standing committees and joint House-Senate committees. He is chairman of the State Safety Coordinating Committee and member of the Joint Prison Oversight Committee, Joint Sunset Committee, House Health Committee and the House County and Municipal Government Committee.

Representative MARY SUE MCCLURKIN - District 43
Representative Mary Sue McClurkin was elected in 1998. She was born on February 14, 1947, received her B.S. from Huntingdon College, and M.A. from Auburn University. She and her husband, Van, are the parents of three children: Burt, Ben, and Daniel. Representative McClurkin is the owner of McClurkin Enterprises, and is a member of the Briarwood Presbyterian Church. Representative McClurkin serves as a member of the Board of Business Council of Alabama, VOCAL, National Women In Government, and Alabama Women's Commission.  She is Vice Chairman of Alabama's State Health Coordinating Council, a member of the State Executive Committee for the Alabama Republican Party, and the Shelby County Republican Executive Committee

Representative CAM WARD - District 49

Representative Cam Ward was elected in 2002. He was born March 24, 1971. In 1993, he earned his B.S. Degree from Troy State University and in 1996 earned his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham. He and his wife, Julie, reside in Alabaster and are the parents of one daughter, Riley. Representative Ward currently is the Executive Director of the Industrial Development Board of Alabaster. Ward has been active in numerous community and civic activities. He serves on the Board of Directors for Leadership Shelby County, the Alabaster/Pelham Rotary Club, the Greater Education Foundation of Shelby County, and CASA of Shelby County. Representative Ward is also a member of the American Bar Association and State Executive Committee for the Alabama Republican Party. He and his wife are members of Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover.
